Castle Baeleton

Castle Baeleton

Baeleton Castle is a moated castle near Draig Dyfn Dern in the Kingdom of Duon Mynded. It was built in 2308 F.H.R. by Sir Tomas Baeleton, a former knight of the realms King Samuel II, with the permission of Lord Harlon Briain, ostensibly to defend the area against Lorian invasion during the Hungry War. Of quadrangular plan, Baeleton Castle has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. Its corners and entrance are marked by towers, and topped by crenellations. Its structure, details and situation in an artificial watery landscape indicate that display was an important aspect of the castle’s design as well as defense. It was the home of the Baeleton family and the center of the manor of Draig Dyfn Dern.

Possession of Baeleton Castle passed through several generations of Sir Tomas’ family, until their line became extinct, when the castle passed by marriage to the Mac Lochlainn family. During the Skaalkynd Wars, Sir Aonghus Mac Lochlainn gave support to the House of O’Duinn, and when Owain IV of the House of Estron became king in 2342, a force was despatched to besiege Baeleton Castle. It is unrecorded whether the siege went ahead, but it is thought that Baeleton was surrendered without much resistance. The castle was confiscated, but returned to the Mac Lochlainn’s when Bran VII of the House of O’Duinn became king in 2385. Descendants of the Mac Lochlainn’s owned the castle until it was taken into custody by Lord Dastrivox Greendeath, in the name of The Red King in 2500 F.H.R.
